Location and Geography

Country: Greece. This is a place of natural beauty, long history and rich cultural heritage. Athens is the nation’s capital where one can visit Acropolis, the ancient citadel located on an outcrop above the city. There are many remarkable places to visit in Greece, such as the Ionian Islands, Cyclades, Dodecanese, Crete, Magnesia and, of course, Sporades. Greece is located in the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula,  in southeast Europe, and eastern Mediterranean Sea. It has a total area of 131,957 km2 and its impressive coastline is 13,676km in length featuring approximately 2,500 islands.

Prefecture: Magnesia. It has a total area of 2,636 km2 and is located in the southeast part of Thessaly. It combines the mainland of Greece, including popular places such as Volos, Pelion, Zagora or Tsagarada, with the islands of Northern Sporades, Alonissos, Skiathos and Skopelos.

Complex of islands: Northern Sporades. The complex of Sporades Islands consists of the following islands: Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, Skiros and many more islands that are largely uninhabited (Peristera, Kira-Panagia, Psathoura, Skantzoura, etc). From an administrative point of view, Northern Sporades belong to the Prefecture of Thessaly, including the Municipalities of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos.

Island: Alonissos. Alonissos (or Liadromia) belongs to the complex of Sporades Islands. It has a total area of approximately 64.5km2 and its coastline is approximately 67km in length. Alonissos is separated from Skopelos and Pelagonisi by the channels of Alonissos (channel width: 2 nm) and Pelagonisi (channel width: 3.5 nm), respectively. This is a region of great geographical diversity, where visitors can discover not only Alonissos but also its neighbouring islands that collectively form a unique ecosystem: the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades.
